Braselton is getting a growing college presence as Free Chapel moves forward with plans to establish a permanent home for Free Chapel College at its Braselton campus.

The Braselton Town Council unanimously approved a rezoning Monday from manufacturing-distribution to office-institutional, clearing the way for Free Chapel to begin the project at its 21.6-acre property at 2001 Cherry Drive.

The college, currently based at Free Chapel's Gainesville campus, is a ministry and leadership training school offering biblical education, hands-on experience and leadership development. Its programs include a Ministry Leadership Certificate, degree programs in partnership with Emmanuel University, a Trade Academy and online programs.

The move to Braselton comes as Free Chapel College experiences significant growth. Overall enrollment has increased approximately 30%, while online enrollment has grown by about 60%.

Rather than constructing a new building, Free Chapel plans to transform more than 40,000 square feet of existing space at its Braselton campus. Renovations will create dedicated classrooms, gathering areas and administrative offices for students and faculty.

The college currently serves approximately 150 students at its Gainesville campus. The Braselton location will allow the program to accommodate as many as 250 students, although some will participate online.

The expansion will also bring a broader range of educational opportunities to Braselton. In addition to its two-year Ministry Leadership Certificate, Free Chapel College partners with Emmanuel University to offer accredited associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs. The college's Trade Academy provides job-ready certificate programs in fields including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, residential construction, building maintenance and appliance repair.

Hands-on learning is also an important part of the college experience. Students can participate in specialized Ministry Labs in areas ranging from counseling and children's ministry to marketing and communications, production, worship and youth ministry.

According to planning documents, the Braselton campus will operate on a traditional academic calendar, generally from August through May. Classes are expected to be held on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., keeping college operations separate from the church's Sunday services.

With zoning approval now secured, Free Chapel plans to move the college into the renovated Braselton space later this year.

For Braselton, the expansion represents more than additional classroom space. It brings a growing educational institution into the community while creating new opportunities for students to pursue ministry, leadership, accredited degree programs and skilled-trade training close to home.
