The town of Braselton was planning to head into the holidays with a freshly installed traffic light at the Jesse Cronic Rd. and Hwy. 124 intersection. Unfortunately, the project has hit a snag and is now expected to wrap up in late winter instead of December.
During early construction prep, crews discovered a gas line sitting directly where a new turn lane is planned. Since the town wasn’t aware of the line when the project went out for bid, work can’t move forward until the utility is relocated.
“It would go underneath the turn lane, and you can’t have a turn lane over a gas line,” Town Manager Jennifer Scott explained.
Moving the line is expected to push completion to around March — a disappointment, Scott noted, since many residents have been eager to see progress.
The good news? Once the utilities are out of the way, the rest of the project should move quickly.
“Luckily, all the equipment is ordered,” Scott said. “Usually that’s your delay.”
Back in June, the Town Council approved a $728,176 bid from Azimuth Contractors to build the traffic signal and upgrade the intersection, with the Georgia Department of Transportation contributing some of the materials.
The project includes several improvements:
Crews will complete the intersection improvements first and then move on to installing the new traffic signal. |
